Salt

watercolor by Kim Marchesseault

I salt my watercolor paintings right before I eat them. Ok, ok, I don’t eat them. It is a relaxing way to let go and achieve a wonderful, mottled effect. I’ve found when I teach children’s art classes, even the most easily distracted children, and those who tend to act out are calmed down by the feel of the salt between their fingers and by watching it fall from their fingers into the wet paint. They love to come back later and see what happened.  I love it, too.
